Lars´ iceberg

For several decades, the brave sea captains who have sailed the Arctic Ocean have described a curious phenomenon – an iceberg that floated or moved with great speed and, from time to time, actually followed ships for days on end. This myth is generally dismissed as the talk of men who have been at sea for too long or perhaps taken one too many swigs from their flasks. Yet the truth is, this mysterious moving iceberg does exist, and it is home to Lars Sturluson. Alfonso visits Lars' iceberg en route to the Ural Mountains of Northern Russia, where Dormia is reputed to exist.

Lars´ iceberg is actually a giant shell of ice that covers a reinforced superstructure of steel beams and flexible rubber joints. It is propelled by a hybrid engine that uses both solar power and diesel fuel. Within the iceberg are a number of fast, single-hull powerboats for fast attack. The innards of the iceberg have been hollowed out and turned into a giant fortress / meeting place for smugglers. The "berg," as it is known, boasts a range of frosty drinks, a restaurant (famous for its reindeer sausages), a nightly offering of Celtic music, a black market shop, a used book store, a vast labyrinth of ice passageways, barracks that serve as a rustic hotel for smugglers, and a penthouse where Lars lives.
