I woke up with a start, shivering. The gray morning sun barely lit the room, and I rushed to get dressed and pack my things. The door opened a crack and Noelle slipped into the room, a plate in her hand, and closed the door behind her. "I brought you breakfast. I'm afraid it's not very good," Noelle giggled nervously. I sighed. Noelle was just as scared as I am. How am I going to make it through the forest? "Noelle," I started, not sure how to continue. "Noelle, I'm going to be fine. I'm going to skip through the forest, holding a flashlight and a mirror, singing happy songs. Then before it's anywhere close to being dark, I'll emerge from the forest and find Mom. Then tomorrow, you'll come through the forest and we'll find you. Then soon, we'll have Dad too, and we'll keep on going to Somnos." Noelle smiled weakly. "Eat your food. You have going to have a very long day, and it's going to start very soon." I laughed at Noelle's motherly attempt, but the sound was hallow.
After breakfast, the gray light started turning light blue. The family left the small house and walked to the beaten path through the treacherous woods. I hugged my dad and little sister tightly. "See you an the other side, Coco." Dad whispered before letting go. Then he and Noelle watched as I disappeared into the forest.

As soon as I stepped through the trees, the light started to dim. Soon I was surrounded by pitch blackness. I could feel it pressing up against me, threatening to swallow me up so that I could never see my family again. Luckily for me, my eyes soon started to adjust and I was able to find the path. I shivered. The forest was freezing cold. It didn't help that there was a wind blowing against her neck. Wait. How was there a wind in the forest? And, more importantly, why was it... warm? I started to turn my head, but stopped. The old ladies had distinctly said DON'T turn around. I kept walking, speeding up slightly as I went. The wind got hotter and stickier. This wasn't wind. Someone was breathing down my neck. I kept walking at a steady speed. Aren't animals supposed to attack things that they think are weak? If I run, the creature will think I'm afraid and weak. Just keep walking.

Oh no, I'm gonna die in here... My neck is damp from the steamy breath of whatever is following me. Two more creatures have joined it. I could occasionally hear a very loud snap from behind me, but other than that the forest was quiet. These horrible monsters lived alone.
Out of the dark I heard a voice. I could have cried with joy. That is, until I realized that it was coming from behind me, and I realized what it was saying. "Daddy, daddy! Don't leave me here Daddy! I can't find Mommy alone!" Another voice joined in, "Betty! No, don't hurt Betty!" Soon there were voices surrounding me. "What's that? I think there's something behind me... Allie? Where'd you go? Ahh!" "It's O.K. Jimmy, mommy and I are going to be alright. Run to the end of the forest, we'll catch up to you." Alex, they're too fast! Just go, I'll be alright!"

It was too much. These poor souls had been killed by these awful creatures. I could feel my self breaking down, all the will draining from my body. The monsters laughed, the sound spinning in my head. They new they would win. My parents would never see me again. I lifted my head. I wanted to say something that the monsters could repeat to my family, so they would know what happened. Wait, that looks like a light! No, it can't be... Can it? There was no light above me, so I had no idea what time it was. My legs felt heavy as I started to run, to strain myself toward the light that would lead me to safety, to my mother, to life. Hmmm...
Don't they say that the last thing you see before you die is a light?

Last time….
Courtnez was disciplined in class after fantasizing about leaving Somnos. He was sent to speak with Resuza. From chatting with Resuza, Courtnez has put together a plan to leave Somnos.

“ Courtnez, it’s almost impossible to leave Somnos, the only people out are Wanderers and outsiders who came with the Great Sleeper. “
“But Soma! With your help I can put my plan into action! We CAN leave!”
“ Courtnez, even if we do leave, what’s waiting for us? What will we do? We might just get out and die Courtnez! I don’t want to die! I’m happy in here!”
“Fine Soma,” I stop walking. “This is it,” I run off.

“Soma, dinner is ready!”
“Okay mom! Coming! Hold on!” I wonder if I should apologize to Courtnez. He was really mad at me for not accepting his plan. Maybe I should phone him. I’ll do it after dinner.
“Soma! Get down here right now!”
I go down the stairs two at a time, almost tripping on the last one. I take my seat at the table.
“What’s for dinner mom?” I smell a rich aroma.
“I read this recipe from the cook book written by Resuza! It’s called ‘Roti’ with a soup called ‘ Daal’. She says a friend of hers taught her this recipe. Her friend came from a place called India.”
I grab a ‘Roti’, and rip a piece off. I fold it into a sort of scoop. I dip it into this stuff called “Daal”. “Mom! This is great! I love it! It’s a bit spicy though! Can I have a drink?”
“ Sure, Soma.” Mom gets up and brings me a cup of Nuroshzin Nectar. This nectar is very expensive, since only 25 Nuroshzins are cropped a year. The reason so little are grown yearly is because if Nuroshzin is turned into paste and touches the Founding Tree, the Founding Tree will catch fire. No one knows why this happens, but we just know not to do it. I take a sip, then the phone rings.
“Soma, it’s Courtnez’s mom. She wants to speak to you.” I take the phone from my mom.
“Hello, Soma speaking.”
“ Soma, do you know where Courtnez is? He came home and ate, and when I called him down for dinner, he wasn’t in his room. His father and I looked around and couldn’t find him. We’re really worried Soma. Please help us!”
I drop my cup of nectar. It explodes all over the floor. I fall to my knees and cry.

“I know exactly where he is.”
I take off my coat and place it on the bed. I collapse onto it, it feels soft as a fresh snowfall. The mourning is over. I just couldn’t bear to be at my best friends funeral. Or so they think… In my heart, I know he’s out there. He’s a strong man, a good man. Thinking of this causes a tear to roll down my cheek. A finger wipes the tear into infinity. I turn to my right, to see my mom has crept into the room and taken a seat next to me. I give her a hug. Only after sobbing on her white sleeve, I realize I’ve ruined it. My eyeliner has caused streaks of black on the perfect white kielburger material, crafted from the leaves of the Kielburger Plant brought into Somnos by Resuza. Resuza said a famous man named Craig Kielburger, who was an activist who fought for child rights (whatever that means), discovered this plant and named it.
“I feel so bad for you, my baby. First your father, only 8 months ago. Now your best friend. How do you do this? You cope so well. If I were you, I’d be on the verge of suicide. I love you, always, my daughter. You make me proud.”
“ Thanks mom, I love you too. Sorry for ruining your dress, I know it was very expensive because it’s from out there.”
“ It’s just a dress. Now, let’s close this chapter of our lives, and move on. Want some Nuroshinz
chilled cream?”
“ Race you down mom!”
Elementary school breezed past without Courtnez. I was, as they say, the lonely loner. I kept to myself and achieved high academic marks. No one even took a second glance at me. I guess I was depressed. My first year of high school went fine; I even made a few friends; Alana and Amanda. I’m now in the 12th grade, senior year. I can’t wait to graduate, imagining Mr. Cro calling up my name, “Soma Hammond, please come up and receive your diploma.”

“Soma? Soma Hammond? Please come up and accept your diploma. Are you asleep?”
“ Huh? What? 65! The answer is 65! Oh…” I blush, realizing I was sleeping. “Sorry Mr. Cro. I walk up to the podium and take the rolled up paper. Mom flashes the photocapturer, a recently developed machine used to catch and preserve the light, making it possible to store images” Thank you Mr. Cro, I’d also like to thank my Mom and my best friends Amanda and Alana.” I step off the stage, give my mom a hug and sit down. That was the end of one book of my life, and it opened another.

I never actually wanted to be a Wanderer. I decided when I was 23 and slacking off at home.
I went to the office of Wanderers, which was currently set up beside the market place, and asked for a job. The receptionist told me I had to take 3 vigorous courses and pass 5 tests to become a Wanderer. I was disappointed that I had to take tests and courses, but I knew it was coming. I had to take the 3 courses at the Institute Of Wandering in the far north side of Somnos. I trekked out there, and took a seat in the class room. I was earlier than I thought because the teacher yelped when she saw me already in the class. Behind the teacher walked several students and a few people dressed in odd robes. The robes were flowing; the women had purple ones while the men had blue. The women had purple coloured hair and the men had blue dyed hair. In their hands they carried Wandering Staves, and then did I realize that these were Wanderers. One by one, the teacher asked us our names. I scanned the bunch around me. These would be my peers for the next year, and I expected to be good friends with all of them. Jordan was the guy I took a liking to, and by the end of the course we were practically married. I easily did all the lessons in Wandering and passed with flying colours. I was actually a real live Wanderer. I was forced to colour my hair purple and wear the same funny robes as the people who taught us. A few days after I graduated, I married Jordan. 2 years later we’ve got a baby girl named Savannah in our arms. Great Wandering day was approaching, which meant I would leave to go Wander and leave Savannah in the care if Jordan, who decided to quit Wandering.

It’s Great Wandering Day! I see Savannah and Jordan waving good bye as I leave the gates.
“Soma is assigned to go to Canada in the continent of North America. Show these tickets to the two women living outside the Strazsyldo’s Forest and they will guide you from there. Here is a map and the tickets.” General Carpington hands me a few tickets and a map. I unroll the map and get on my way.

“Ugh! It’s been 2 hours almost! I think I’m lost!” I yell at myself for being so ignorant. “The path says go left, I went right!”
“Who’s there?” A raspy voice calls out from a bush. I nearly sprint away, but my feet don’t move. Do I know this voice? I think I do. Out of the blue, a man in ripped clothes with burly brown facial hair jumps at me and pins me. He smells as if he hasn’t bathe in days, and in his hand is a sharp rock.
“I’ll have you know I am a Wanderer! Get off me! The name is Soma Hammond, and I will use force if you do not oblige to get up.”
The man’s jaw practically drops to the floor. Picking up his jaw, he stutters “Soma? Soma Hammond!?” He gets up and so do I. As soon as we’re up he embraces me in a bear hug. I struggle to breath.
“Who are you?” I push him back and I get a good glance at his eyes.
I recognized those eyes, eyes filled with intelligence and cunning planning skills. Tears, lots of them. I could swear the tiny insects underneath us thought it was doomsday and the world is flooding. I re-embraced him.
“Is it really you Courtnez?”
“Soma, you recognize me after all these years... You’re looking perfect as always. Why are you in the forest? Did you run away like me?” I step back from his embrace again. He looks me over. He gasps, “A Wandering staff...” He puts his palm to his face and shakes his head. “ I thought we were rebels? I thought we were gonna cause mischief and protests.”
“Courtnez, after you ‘died’ I was brought to reality. Everyone thinks you are dead for god’s sake. I decided to go straight and I completed school with flying marks. I became a Wanderer after leeching off my mom’s couch for a few years. I met Jordan there, and we married soon after. I have a daughter. EVERYONE thinks you just died and were never found, or were killed.”
“ No way... you’re lying! Grawr!” Courtnez punches the tree besides him and runs off. I look at the tree and see a deep indent of his fist. I must catch him, who knows what he’s going to do...I take off in a sprint.

“Courtnez! Where are you?!” I’m following the trail of blood dripping from his hand after punching the tree. I’m led straight back to the still open gates of Somnos. Old Wanderers are walking back into Somnos, and new ones are still pouring out. I see Courtnez approaching the gates. A guard has stopped him and is questioning him. I walk up behind Courtnez and put my arm on his arm. His reflexes kick in and he jumps backwards and takes a slash at me. Blood hits the floor. I clutch my stomach which he has cut. His face shows utter shock. The guard grabs him but Courtnez slips free and runs through the gates. The other Wanderers stop and begin tending to me. They wrap my stomach with bandages and I run straight into Somnos once I’m all patched up. “I bet he’s running to his house to see his mother and father... His father is most likely working and his mom is home alone.” Once again, I sprint off.

Huffing and puffing I arrive at his house. The door is unlocked. I open it and creep through the passage. I can hear him talking to his mom. “You’re not my son; my son is 12 years old and he’s been dead for years!” screams his mom. “Mom, it’s me, Courtnez. If I lose the beard I look like dad! Honest!” I walk in between them.
“Oh, hello Soma. Do you know who this impostor is? He’s not Courtnez is he…”
“Mrs. Swift, it’s a long story but this is Courtnez. You see, Courtnez never actually died, he just ran aw-“
“Open the door! This is the Security Brigade of Somnos! If you do not open we will use force!” I’m interrupted by the loud voice of a guard. The door crashes in and a miniature army of men storm into the small house. They grab our arms and cover our mouths. “We are taking you to be exiled. You have escaped and re-entered Somnos and know too much about the Outside’s cruel ways.” I hear Courtnez’s muffled yells. In an instance, the guard holding Courtnez is on his knees and Courtnez is reaching for his knife. The guard holding me uses his years of training to instantly fall asleep and pull out his sword. Courtnez also falls asleep. They charge eachother, and Courtnez jumps over the guard, agile as a monkey. Courtnez’s dagger goes towards the guard’s chest.
“Don’t do it Court!” I scream at him. He looks at me, along with the other guards. I realize I just woke him up. The guard who was just about to die has a smirk on his face. Courtnez looks at him with shock. Courtnez falls to the floor, a sword jammed in between his ribs and his heart. Blood is on the floor. I collapse onto his dead body and weep like I’ve never wept before. I cry more than I did at my father’s funeral. The guards walk out. I lie here in a pile of blood which is not my own, but the blood of my best friend. I close my eyes, and for once my sleeping self doesn’t take over, but I fall into a real deep human sleep. I haven’t awoken since.

“Kevin! Come down for dinner and stop reading that book of yours!”
“Coming mom!” I close the book I’m reading, titled The Life And Death Of Courtnez Swift. I go downstairs to eat my meal of Roti and Daal, just like Soma had hundreds of year ago.

The End

Back at the camp. I’ve been pacing back and forth all day. I’ve sat down and tried to read or draw or rest but I can’t. I hope that Jolene is alright. This is driving me crazy. I also don’t want to go through there tomorrow.

I’ve been afraid of the dark since I was five. My older brother locked me in the basement while his twin made scary noises and jumped out at me. I know that sounds stupid but if you knew my brothers you’d be afraid to.

But ever since that I’ve never been able to be in the dark unless in asleep. Today there have been shrieks and other scary and bizarre noises coming form the forest. I don’t understand how these two ladies can live here. How do they ever get sleep at night?

Great the sun is setting. I have to find wood for a fire.
I collected some sticks and made a small fire to cook a can of beans for dinner. As I sat there lost in thought I heard something that sounded like Jolene screaming. I jumped up and ran over to the edge of the forest.

”Jolene?” I called into the forest. To my horror the response was another scream.

“Alisa help. Help me please.” She yelled. I ran back to camp and grabbed my flash light and a sweater.

“Jolene, I’m coming.” I yelled as I ran into the forest. I looked around. Up in the trees I could see some glowing eyes. There were huge shadows everywhere. I heard another scream.

”Alisa, help me, please.” I ran in the direction of where the scream had come from. I stopped, in front of me there were several large shadows. As I looked at them, I remembered the flash light. I turned it on. I suddenly wished I hadn’t.

What was in front of me wasn’t people. It was several very large birds. They had glowing eyes and long sharp beaks. They had large sharp talons and wings longer than my arms.

I screamed and turned to run. When I did, I almost crashed into another one. I had no where to go. Slowly the circle began to close in.

Chanel twisted her dark, wavy locks into a bun on the top of her head and stuck a pair of chopsticks through it. The two old ladies in the cabin didn't scare her. Chanel could look into the forest and laugh. Noelle looked at the forest and shook with fear. We almost had to turn back because Noelle was so afriad to go through alone. But the old ladies had stressed the importance of 1: Going through alone, 2: Getting through before it was dark, and, the most bewildering and terrifying, 3: Never.. turning... around. So Noelle would be going through alone, and Chanel would be waiting three days with two strange old ladies who communicated with a cat while she waited her turn. Chanel's mom turned and smiled to Chanel. "I'll see you on the other side, Coco."
Chanel rolled her eyes at the nickname, but gave her mom a tight hug anyway. "Be safe," Chanel's dad whispered to his wife, giving her a kiss. At that moment Chanel realized just how dangerous the woods were, and just how likely it was that her mom would never see some or all of them ever again. Tears wellled in her eyes. She bit her lip, fighting against the pressure that was building. She choked them back, being brave for Noelle. If she was scared, her 9 year old sister was terrified. She didn't need to add to that.
Chanel smiled weakly, knowing that, even though it was dangerous, they needed to pass through the forest if they wanted to get to Somnos before the opening, and closing, of the gates. Her mother took a deep breath and looked up at the sky. The sun was just visible behind the mountain. All of a sudden the sun moved and the sky was filled with light, casting long shadows around them. Chanel watched her mom as kissed her youngest daughter, then her husband, and finally, Chanel. Then she disapeared into the dark trees. They watched until she was out of sight. When she had been completely swallowed by the dark gloom of the tall trees, Chanel's dad turned and walked back to the cabin. Noelle turned and chased after him. Chanel squinted into the gloom, but her mother had disapeared. Chanel gulped and turned to head back to where her dad & sister where waiting with two old ladies, a cat, and, most likely, breakfast.
The two old ladies sat at a table, playing with a stack of odd looking cards. Noelle was petting the too big cat. My dad was sniffing curiously at what I guessed was our breakfast. I could wait 'til lunch. I ducked outside. The sun was steadily climbing it's way into the sky. I hurried down to a nearby hill and scrambled to the top. I sat down, completely winded. The land spread all around me, but I couldn't see anything other than land. I sighed, almost longing for the change of sceanery that the forest would offer. I sat there, staring off into nothing for a long time. After a while I realized that I was hungry, not to mention cold, sore, and lonely. I tumbled down to the bottom of the hill and ran to the cabin. My dad was serving dinner. I didn't realize how long I had sat there without moving an inch. "Dad," I spoke without thinking. "Dad, I want to go through tomorrow." My dad stared at me, curious to my change of heart. But I was completely serious. I wanted to go through. I wanted to get it over with. And I wanted to see my mom.
I think he guessed at that last one and his expression softened. "O.K. Coco. You go through tomorrow." I nodded. He handed me my plate, which I grabbed, begginning to eat greedily. It gave me something to do. In truth, I wasn't quite sure why I was so eager to go through the dark, scary woods that could get me killed. I just did. I finished what was on my plate quickly, without really realizing what I was eating. Then I hurried to my makeshift bed and climbed in, suddenly very tired. I had to start my day early. I needed sleep. I pulled the sheet over my head and focused on my heavy breathing. Sooner than I had excpected, I was running through the dark forest, trying to get away from the thing that chased me, screaming last words and dripping blood on me, all the time getting tangled in my sheets.

Enter Courtnez: Chapter 1

In an ordinary classroom in Somnos…
“Good morning class. How are we doing today?”
“ Good morning Mr. Cro!”
“ Class, today’s topic is what we want to do when we grow up. Please raise your hands if you want to answer.”
Several kids raise their hands. He picks Soma, my best friend.
“ Thank you for your hand Soma, you may answer.”
“ When I grow up, I want to be a scientist! I want to study the Founding Tree!”
“ That is a very nice answer Soma! Please take your seat. What do you want to do Courtnez?”
I put down my hand, and stand up.
“ When I grow, I want to leave Somnos! I want to explore what’s beyond the great gates!”
“ Well Courtnez, you can only do that as a Wanderer. And even then, you have to search for a great sleeper, not explore.”
“ No! I don’t want to be a Wanderer! I want to leave Somnos, and live in places like Canny-duh, or Uhm-Erica!”
“ Now now Courtnez. You would be punished for leaving Somnos! Only Wanderers are allowed to leave! Courtnez, please talk to the counselor about this. Children your age must not think about these topics. I will tell the counselor to talk to you. Please have a seat. Class, hold on one minute.”
Mr. Cro walked to the class telecommunicator. She opened the connector and put her palm on the thought-speaker. As if magically, the counselor answered.
“ Hello?”, said the counselor, “Mr. Casablancas here.”
“Sorry to interrupt you Mr. Casablancas. This is Nick Cro of classroom 1337. Your counseling student is having some strange thoughts.”
“Oh? Which one? I have many. Wait wait wait. Let me guess, is it Courtnez? What did he do this time? Think of what would happen if he burnt the Founding Tree?”
“ Nice guess, but no. We were discussing the topic of what we would like to do when we are older. He wants to leave Somnos. We must make sure he does not try to run away! It would be best if I send him to talk to you.”
“ Send him in then, Nic.”

After school…
“Soma! Wait up!” I run to catch up to Soma. Me and Soma have been best friends since we were in preschool. Our families are very close.
“ Hey Courtnez! How was detention? Did Mr. Casablancas really chew you out?”
“ Sigh, tell me about it! No one appreciates creative thinkers in Somnos. Remember when the great sleeper, Alfonso, arrived in Somnos? He came with a female named Resuza. Resuza still lives in Somnos! She’s become a writer. She has written many books on the world outside! She also does counseling. She deals with people who have funny thoughts! Guess who I talked to today!?”
“ No way Court! Are you lying? You actually met Mrs. Resuza!? I don’t believe you!”|
“She’s very nice actually! She told me about the bad stuff in the outside world!”
“Really? Like what!?”
“She told me how there are ways to escape Somnos, but no one except her and the high-ups know… I think I can somehow find these out, and make a plan!”

Oh my god! Somnos is very annoying. I’ve started classes and almost every one is about sleeping! It gets worse. I’ve made almost no friends and all the girls are annoying. There’s this one girl Ariia, oh how she irritates me!
On Monday I was late for sleeping arts and when I burst into the room, the teacher asked for my reason. I told him how I had overslept and hadn’t even bothered to eat breakfast. Ariia decides to make a snide comment:
“How can a regular old mortal oversleep? You don’t even do stuff in your sleep. You stay in one small position for 12 hours. Oversleeping is walking to class asleep. That’s what the rest of us do. You? You shouldn’t even be here. You’re not important and the only reason you’re here because Alfonso was your boyfriend… anyway could you possibly become like us? I mean thinking about it; you have no reason to be here. You’re going to fai-”
“Ariia,” my teacher interrupted before the firey red haired devil could continue. “That’s enough. Resuza is different from us but she is still an amazing student. I wouldn’t criticize her when she’s doing better then you… take a seat Resuza.”
Ariia is one of those kinds of people that everyone looks up to. She’s the model type with the red hair and the cheerleader body.
I was different. I was the tough, smart and active child, while everyone else liked to sleep. I’d be sitting under a tree and reading when I would find myself hoping there would be a group of boys with a sports object flying around. Then I would glance and see that everyone was talking, play-fighting etc. With their eyes closed. Me? I felt completely out of place and found myself hoping there would be a guy life Alfonso around.
I wanted to go home but I knew it was impossible to find him again or to get through the Straszydlo forest by myself again.
I’m staying put…. For now.
